Saturday, February 20th at about 1:00pm in the 200th block of Oak St. Orange NJ. Rudy Walker, musician, teacher, composer, world traveled drummer, lost everything to fire that put nine homes and 38 people homeless, including his sister Cynthia Walker. Thank God no one was hurt but sent six fire fighters to St. Barnabas for minor treatment.
We want to bless the brother with what he deserves from those of us that have been blessed with the gift of rhythm that MR. WALKER, has given to the us and the universe by donating $50.00 bucks. Yes, fifty bucks....
Give by contacting one of the organizers or e-mailing or call....
When I first started playing drums around age 7 or 8, I had no idea that they would become my life...my passion. I do know that I loved playing and it seemed natural to me. Music of all kinds, especially drumming, exited me. I became a jazz drummer because of drummers like Billy Brooks, Art Blakey, Eddie Gladdin, Lionel Hampton, Popa Joe,Philly Joe, Billy Higgins and so many other great Jazz drummers who made me feel good when I saw and heard them play. I became an African drummer because of drummers like Mongo, Willie Bobo, Olatungi, Ladi Camara, Chief Bey, Les Ballet African, Souleymane Diop and Obara Wali Rahman...my first African drum teacher
More Drumsounds
Even though they are different styles of drumming (Jazz and African), for me, they are very connected. I guess it's because I hear a certain swing in all of the drumming that I do. I hear that swing that came here with my ancestors on those slave ships. That swing that even they had no idea they would produce. So in that way, when I play, it's all African to me.
