Tell us about yourself
I try to serve the music and the situation. If I play the music, the drums play themselves.

I'm involved in several original projects (some are on the player), and I freelance. The bottom lines for me are great music and great folks. We all need to get paid, but if it's all about money, one would do better in going to law school, then getting an MBA, no? Or we'd all be auditioning for Madonna. Nothing against her, she's sold a lot more tickets and T shirts than I have, but balance in all things.....

Locally I've worked with Ray Gaskins, John Dahlman, L'Tanya Mari, John Dahlman, Damon Foreman, O'Donel Levy, Mark Mosley, Arch Thompson, Bill Heid, Wayne Wilentz, Whit Williams, Ruby Glover, David Lowe, Cheryl Jones, Charles Bubeck, Kendra Holt, Ben Sands, Earl Wilson, Greg Thompkins, Zach Graddy, Thad Wilson, DonVonte McCoy, DeAndrey Howard, Vernon Wolst, Bruce Henderson, Antonio Parker, Dontae Winslow, Steve Carrington, Joel Holmes, Ernie Barnes, Jerry Gordon, Bob Barrett, Gary Richardson, Christopher Brooks, Ralph Peterson, Eliot Levine, Peter Edelman, Jack Gussio, and Mario Hunter, James Bazen's Big Band, the Potomac Jazz Orchestra, Thad Wilson's Jazz Orchestra, the Crabtowne Big Band, Eubie Blake Jazz Orchestra, Mood Swings, and Blue Moon. On the outer side, I've worked with Mud Pie, Tyler Higgins, Circus of Saints, and Tom Reyes. I've worked with artists in the West African, Brazilian and Afro Cuban traditions as well, e.g., Armand Ntep, Mfa Kera and Afro Soul, FrankoJazz, Askan Wii, Rose Moraes, Samuel Munguia, Dani Corteza, Patrick Alban, and Gigi McLaughlin.

I've recorded with Dee Stone, Kendra Holt, Postmodern Blues, Collage, Jadeskyy, PDFOP, Dana Jessen, Circus of Saints, Tom Reyes, Black Heritage, Collage, and many others.

Nick, Sorry I can't make it. I'll send a little something though. I didn't know he is ill. He has played with organist Gene Ludwig before and spoke highly of him.

Put it this way: Jazz is a good barometer of freedom… In its beginnings, the United States of America spawned certain ideals of freedom and independence through which, eventually, jazz was evolved, and the music is so free that many people say it is the only unhampered, unhindered expression of complete freedom yet produced in this country.~~~Duke Ellington

I think the idea is now for blacks to write about the history of our music. It's time for that, because whites have been doing it all the time.

It's time for us to do it ourselves and tell it like it is~~

Jazz is a very democratic musical form. It comes out of a communal experience. We take our respective instruments and collectively create a thing of beauty.

The Top 50 Releases of 2012/JazzTimes/February issue 2013

If you combined all Top 50 releases in terms of hard copy sales. Would it amount to 250,000 units sold, 300,000 sold? And what's wrong with Jazz radio or what's left of it? Billboard Jazz Charts for April 6, 2013 has Madeleine Peyroux "The Blue Room" @#1. Yet on the Jazz Week Charts for April 8, 2013 Peyroux is not even in the Top 50.

Man that's how I dig…

Tony Adamo Says "Get hip to Eddie Gale"

Posted by Tony Adamo on March 30, 2013 at 11:45am 0 Comments

Having developed his skills amongst the cream of New York's hard bop players, Eddie Gale helped ring in jazz's controversial new thing during the 1960s and 1970s on a series of influential releases. His inspired trumpet playing graced Cecil Taylor's Unit Structures, Larry Young's Of Peace and Love and a series of recordings and performances with Sun Ra's Arkestra. He also cut a pair of under-acknowledged soul-jazz influenced albums as a leader for Blue Note at the end of the…
