JAZZ AS A SALEABLE-COMMODITY

In order for jazz to succeed as a saleable commodity today, the music must be accompanied by visual entertainment worthy of generating revenue also. Every possibility available must be a consideration in the endeavor to present jazz as a competitive saleable item. The latest sound and film technology...interesting and entertaining themes should be filmed to accommodate and support the sound. It is a large undertaking, but once the item is successful, it also becomes worthy of virtually all… Continue

New York Experience

When I first arrived in New York in 1962, I was at a party where I was approached by an American student who remarked that he heard that I was from Africa. During our conversation he asked me whether we had any fast food in Africa. I then replied!.......... In Africa you had to be fast.........otherwise you become food!

The Developmant of Jazz Piano

The Development Of Jazz Piano

By Hotep Idris Galeta

Around the beginning of the 20th century, the earliest Jazz piano style emerged, centered in New Orleans. This style was created and initially dominated by the pianist Joseph Ferdinand La Menthe, better known as “Jelly Roll Morton” (1885-1941). Morton was a combination of ragtime pianist, composer, blues and Jazzman rolled into one. He began playing professionally in the “Redlight District” of New Orleans called Storyville in… Continue

Hotep Idris Galeta: Takes It Home

Hotep Idris Galeta - Published: November 15, 2003

By Nils Jacobson

Despite more than three decades on wax, pianist Hotep Idris Galeta has largely escaped the public eye. Perhaps that's not too much of a surprise, given his rather unassuming nature and the fact that he's never had much of an itch for the spotlight.

Galeta (b. June 7, 1941) grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. During his teenage years he was drawn into a very active… Continue

The History and Development of Jazz

The History And Development Of Jazz

By Hotep Idris Galeta

One cannot write objectively about an art form without taking into account the various socio- political influences responsible for its development and evolution. The development of Jazz and its effect on popular music in the United States and the rest of the world is the direct result of the African slave trade and the African Diaspora in the southern part of the United States. This unique art form… Continue

Jazz; as a Commercial Entity

The disappearance of Jazz Music from Commercially Advertising Radio Stations contributed greatly to a decline in the popularity of this Music.

In light of the fact that there is not now one single Commercially Advertising Radio Station in this Country playing Jazz in their programming; many benefits for the Jazz Community have been lost.

Firstly, Musicians no longer receive those Royalties which were paid to air their Music, on Commercially operating stations. Aside from… Continue

How do we perserve the value of jazz and what role do musicians especially black play?

I think that most all who enjoy the artistry presented in jazz music will undoubtedly say it has and is should be a valued aspect of our American heritage. The fact that it as been proclaimed by our national legislative branch as "an American Treasure" attest to that. However, with such a following and jesture of… Continue

Put it this way: Jazz is a good barometer of freedom… In its beginnings, the United States of America spawned certain ideals of freedom and independence through which, eventually, jazz was evolved, and the music is so free that many people say it is the only unhampered, unhindered expression of complete freedom yet produced in this country.~~~Duke Ellington

I think the idea is now for blacks to write about the history of our music. It's time for that, because whites have been doing it all the time.

It's time for us to do it ourselves and tell it like it is~~
