With the release of her debut CD, “Beautiful Flower”, Ayanna Gregory has introduced herself to the world. For this soul singer, songwriter, and agent of change, music is more than entertainment; it is her mission. And with penetrating depth, Ayanna sings songs that make audiences feel and heal. In a time so needy of real music, Ayanna promises to bring to the world a most beautiful and meaningful brand of Soul Music.

Ayanna is no stranger to the entertainment world. While growing up as the daughter of celebrated Comedian and Human Rights Activist Dick Gregory, Ayanna was blessed with the opportunity to interact with such mega talents as Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye,

Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and the Jackson Family. But the glamour of the entertainment world isn’t what resonated most with her. Raised with a deep awareness and concern for Human Rights, Ayanna’s musical roots are steeped in the struggle of the “Freedom Movement”. Ayanna knew early on that her gift of song would be her gift to the struggle.

Photobucket

In 1990, Ayanna became recognized as a powerful and progressive voice as a student activist at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Here she was called on to sing at marches, rallies and anti-war demonstrations. From there and for the next decade, Ayanna would become a major voice within the various cultural, political, and spiritual movements in the nation’s capitol. In 1992, Ayanna joined 2000 Black, a “message music” project and went on to record, perform and tour with this group for the next six years. By 1995, Ayanna was gaining recognition as a solo vocalist. As an emerging Soul artist, she began performing locally, nationally and internationally at clubs, theaters, music festivals and political events. In 1999, Ayanna teamed with up-and-coming producer James McKinney to bring forth her debut album, “Beautiful Flower”, released in May 2003.

Four years in the making, “Beautiful Flower” reflects a highly spiritual and deeply soulful musical journey. This project embodies soul music, literally and figuratively. In the traditional sense, it celebrates a mixture of soul genres: R&B, Gospel, Blues, Hip Hop and Spiritual. But most importantly, these songs inspire the human spirit...to grow, to heal, and to live.

Ayanna’s music and mission have taken her around the country and to three other continents; performing at countless music festivals, historic venues, and notable political events. A few career highlights include performances at: The Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, and the Carter Barron Amphitheater in Washington, D.C., the 1997 Million Women March, the African/African-American Summits in Senegal (1995), Zimbabwe(1997), and Ghana (1999), 2001/2003 Black Radio Exclusive Conferences, and Louis Farrakhan’s 2004 “Daughters of Legends” Savior’s Day Concert.

Over the past decade, Ayanna has had the privilege of sharing the stage with such icons as Isaac Hayes, Will Downing, Roy Ayers, Ahmad Jamal, Lou Donaldson, Jennifer Holiday, Najee, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Maya Angelou, the Last Poets, Donald Byrd, James Moody, Rachelle Ferrell, Bill Cosby, Stevie Wonder and Dick Gregory.

In 2004, Ayanna kicked off her international “Beautiful Flower” tour in Los Angeles with her long time musical influence and friend, Stevie Wonder. After delivering Ayanna’s glowing introduction to the show, Wonder then joined Ayanna on stage and performed several songs with her that evening.

This year, in addition to touring with her band, Ayanna is currently rehearsing and scheduling performances for a new one woman play (co-penned by her) on the life and songs of the High Priestess of Soul Nina Simone. She is also working on her sophomore album, which is due to be released in 2006.

As a musician, writer and producer, Ayanna continues to grow and etch out her place in the entertainment world. As an activist, Ayanna will continue to be a musical messenger for the planet.

Pharoah Sanders (born October 13, 1940) is a Grammy Award-winning American jazz saxophonist.
Saxophonist Ornette Coleman once described him as "probably the best tenor player in the world." Emerging from John Coltrane's groups of the mid-1960s Sanders is known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of "sheets of sound." Sanders is an important figure in the development of free jazz; Albert Ayler famously said: "Trane was the Father, Pharoah was the Son, I am the Holy Ghost

Put it this way: Jazz is a good barometer of freedom… In its beginnings, the United States of America spawned certain ideals of freedom and independence through which, eventually, jazz was evolved, and the music is so free that many people say it is the only unhampered, unhindered expression of complete freedom yet produced in this country.~~~Duke Ellington

I think the idea is now for blacks to write about the history of our music. It's time for that, because whites have been doing it all the time.

It's time for us to do it ourselves and tell it like it is~~
