BOHEMIAN CAVERNS

http://www.findoutdc.com/images/bohemian-cavern.jpg

In 1926 a little jazz club was opened in the basement of a drugstore located at 11th and U St. called Club Caverns. Club Caverns soon became famous for their floor and variety shows. Washington's elite would come in droves dressed in their most formal attire, to be entertained by the likes of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. In the 1950's Club Caverns soon became known as Crystal Caverns. The club would operate successfully, but it would reach its zenith peak when the club became known as Bohemian Caverns in the late 1950's to early 1960's. Best known for its great Jazz and elegant atmosphere.

In 1962 Ramsey Lewis recorded "The Ramsey Lewis Trio at the Bohemian Caverns." This recording earned accolades and great commercial success. Mr. Lewis would
shine another bright light on the corner of 11th and U St. when he won a Grammy
for his recording "The In Crowd" recorded on the LP, "The In Crowd, Live at the
Bohemian Caverns."

The Caverns has brought a great many artists to its stage, but it was the immortals that built this house and our legacy: Washington's Native Son Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Count Basie, John Malachi, Sarah Vaughn, Shirley Horn, Buck Hill, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae, Nina Simone, Billy Taylor, Tony Taylor, Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Cannonball Adderley, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, Hank Mobley, Bobby Timmons, Philly Joe Jones, Rueben Brown, Marshall Hawkins, George 'Dude' Brown, Bud Powell, Jimmy Smith, Richard Groove Holmes, Charles Mingus, Larry Ridley, Ray Charles, Al Hibbiler, Joe Williams, Horace Silver, Lou Donaldson, Ray Brown, Ray Byrant, Benny Golson, B.B. King, The Three Sounds, Kenny Burrell, West Montgomery, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Freddy Hubbard, Milt Jackson, Woody Shaw, Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Cobb, Keter Betts, Ramsey Lewis, Less McCann, Miles Davis, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Pharoah Sanders, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, The Heath Brothers, Eric Dolphy, Wynton Marsalis, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Oscar Brown Jr, Eddie Jefferson, Jon Hendricks, Bill Cosby, Dick Gregory, Redd Fox, Moms Mabley, and many, many more...

First Wooden Clock by: BENJAMIN BANNEKER

Using as a model a pocket watch he had borrowed from a merchant or traveler, Banneker carved wooden replicas of each piece and used the parts to make a clock that struck hourly. He completed the clock in 1753, at the age of 21. Due to its precision (it struck every hour, on the hour, and continued to do so nearly forty years) the clock brought fame to young Banneker. Thus he began a watch and clock repair business. The clock continued to work until his death. Read more....

George, thank you and thank GOD for blessing you with insight to create WDCJN!   The Network has been my connection to the greatest Jazz Legends alive today and Emerging Jazz Icons.  Many of whom I've met and collaborated with over the last 3 yrs after our introduction.  Its a Wonderful thing when Creativity collides with History, Experience and Cosmic Energy and that's exactly the vortex you've created with the WDCJN.  Keep letting your light Shine Brother,......... Keep letting it SHINE~~~Lou

KEEPING PEOPLE CONNECTED AROUND THE WORLD. Telling it like it is !

I think the idea is now for blacks to write about the history of our music. It's time for that, because whites have been doing it all the time.

Notice the resemblence! Who are we? Why did they destroy our Pyramids?

Put it this way: Jazz is a good barometer of freedom… In its beginnings, the United States of America spawned certain ideals of freedom and independence through which, eventually, jazz was evolved, and the music is so free that many people say it is the only unhampered, unhindered expression of complete freedom yet produced in this country.~~~Duke Ellington
