I can see it's been a while since your comment was posted. I know I don't network as often as I should. My day job keeps me pretty busy. Still, you pose a great question. How do we collectively promote and present our musical heritage (I also like to use the word, "legacy"). I think the best thing we can do is to exchange ideas. I once heard a brother speak at the first night of Kwaanza. Don't worry. I'm not going to preach. Just hear me out. That night, the first night, which is Unity (Umoja), we had members of the Masons in attendance, the baptist church, muslims, I was there representing my African History Study Group, NAACP, African spiritualists, and any other variety you can think of. The man who got up and spoke was from the local Nation of Islam. Instead of delivering an "Elijah Muhammad says" lecture, he spoke of unity of logic. Catchy phrase with an even stronger message for people of color, which in this case can be applied to people of jazz. He said, "In the past, we've shown our unity by gathering in large numbers for marches, sit-ins, demonstrations, and rallies. We have also demonstrated our ability to turn out in large numbers for concerts, sporting events, and other entertainment venues. That's one type of unity, but our world today requires a different type of unity. It is unity of logic. That means getting us all on the same page when it comes to philosophy, or at the very least, conceptually. This can only be done thru an exchange of ideas, which is a proven route to greater understanding. It's not the only way to achieve understanding, but it is a good idea for people with ideas and concepts to share them with each other. The problem we (people of jazz and color) have struggled with is the inability or unwillingness to openly share. We're often too busy trying to out-run, out-shine, out-perform, out-do, or just plain "out" each other to ever consider working together.

I think we can and should cross-promote. Become sister stations (or programs).

That was the main appeal of starting an internet station. The potential is limitless. If potential is limitless, there is plenty of possiblity for all of us.

I program an internet station. We're not just jazz. We also play Classic soul, Motown, Neo-soul, and Urban AC. I've tried to create a station like the ones I listened to growing up. When it comes to newer music, we try to feature the best young artists who embrace the musical legacy. For example, Vivian Green, Aziza (from the DC area), Ledisi, Dwele, Bilal, Maxwell, Eric Benet, Rashaan Patterson, Raheem DeVaughn, and most recently, the Floacist.

By combining the genres as well as generations, it is hopeful that we might also combine those people who enjoy these typs of music by focusing on what the music has in common, rather than how they differ. That's why our station is called, Smooth Soul. the word, Smooth represents our use of contemporary Jazz, and Soul covers anything from Sam Cooke and Con Funk Shun or Earth, Wind & Fire to Tony Toni Tone, Mary J. Blige, and Donnell Jones.

Together, it's called the Premium Adult Blend. That's what we're doing here, in Central GA. Our listeners are all over. Outside the U.S., our top countries tuning in are: Italy, Canada, Spain, Norway, Germany, Honduras (can you believe it? Honduras !?!),Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil, and Japan. That's just the Top 10. There's even a few people listening in Kuwait. Hopefully, our troops. We can build on that, too.

My idea is to think outside the box (internet), look for a larger audience (global), and strive to make our music more relevant, sexier, and more exciting. It's already all of that, but we need to promote and present it as such.
