Knarrative Will Set Us Free | Walk Spirit Talk Spirit Review by: Steven Azami 03/08/22 (Radio Airplay)

George V. Johnson Jr voice * Elijah Easton saxophone * Donvonte McCoy trumpet * Allyn Johnson piano * Herman Burney bass * Dana-j Hawkins drums

Washington D.C. jazz artist George V Johnson Jr delivers an exhilarating bit of vocal bebop, with his release of "Knarrative Will Set Us Free." Written in homage to the late pianist and frequent John Coltrane collaborator McCoy Tyner, this track features a fiery rhythm section built around a piano vamp that's very much in Tyner's style and spirit. Johnson's voice is in fine form here as he delivers an inclusive message of equity and unity, punctuated by strikingly passionate and inventive and trumpet. An extended solo section, passed first between the horns and then the piano and drums, fills out the midsection before a final chorus fades into a whisper, rounding out this dynamic arrangement. Jazz aficionados absolutely need to check out George V Johnson's "Knarrative Will Set Us Free", particularly fans of bop and vocal jazz.

Outstanding production, excellent mix, piano features prominently in the overall mix, which was a great choice. You definitely captured McCoy Tyner's oeuvre here. Fantastic band, amazing chemistry and support. Nice melody and repetition with the vocal. I really liked the 2nd voice, gives the lyrics a sort of polytextural and polyrhythmic feel. Solos were all off the chart, particularly the piano. Love the little diminuendo at the end. Again, an exceptional ensemble of highly talented musicians, playing with great energy and enthusiasm. Stellar track, all around. Truly an honor to have had the opportunity to review.

The edict that drives Knarrative is this one question, inspired by a Sonia Sanchez play: "uh-huh, but how do it free us?!" George Johnson has captured that directive with "Knarrative Will Set Us Free!"~Karen Hunter, founder of Knarrative.

Celebrating the Holy Days Join Washington, D.C.-based, African-American a cappella ensemble, Sweet Honey in the Rock, for a rare and intimate Live Streaming celebration of the Holy Days. With five-part harmonies and sign language interpretation, Sweet Honey’s sound ranges from African to blues to gospel and jazz. Celebrating the Holy Days offers a rare fusion of traditional American holiday spiritual songs and hymns, as well as songs from other cultures and religions ranging from Africa to Israel.

The three-time Grammy® Award-nominated and internationally renowned group will also perform songs from the group’s extensive repertoire, which includes We Are, Let There Be Peace, The Women Gather, and Come Ye. Since 1973, Sweet Honey has empowered and inspired with songs about a range of social issues, blending potent messages with gorgeous artistry to stir the mind and the soul. After the concert, the audience is invited to stay for an interactive conversation with Sweet Honey, reflecting on the group’s journey over the last two years and the creative opportunities they explored during the pandemic. The ensemble will explore the theme of Sankofa, an Akan Twi and Fante word which means to go back and or to fetch. The conversation will be moderated by Katea Stitt, host and producer at WPFW radio station in Washington DC. Thank you so much for being part of the SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK® family!

The Artistry of George V Johnson Jr

To whom it may concern George V. Johnson Jr. was my jazz singing teacher over the period of summer 2011 (June-September 2011).George is an outstanding singer in his own right, and has wonderful teaching abilities that complete this skill. George is a sensitive and thoughtful instructor, and was attentive to any request or complexity I have faced through the process of learning his style of jazz singing, the vocalese.

In the past, I was learning jazz with several teachers in California, people who gave me the opportunity to take my first steps into the realm of jazz. However, it was through my study with George that I could experience the heart and nature of true, black culture deep connection to jazz, and how this singing was born out of the painful history of black communities in the US, joined with the cheerful and happy moments of music making and pleasures of life. George introduced me to important musicians in his cycle such as Eddie Jefferson, James Moody, Hank Mobley, Miles Davis, Sarah (Sassy) Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald and more. When teaching me Hank Mobley’s This I Dig of You, George was working with me on correct pronunciation and tempo; When working on Miles Davis’ So What, George emphasized modes of wording and rhythm, and the relationship between lyrics and tune; when working on Body &Soul it was emotion and modes of expression that was in the focus; George was also very helpful in helping me to re-shape and better understand the modus and style of songs such as Dat Dere, Joy Spring, I’ve Got it Bad, and more.

All in all, George proved to be an extremely talented individual who helped me tremendously in understanding jazz music background and way of singing, the genealogical ties between people and style, and how all these link together to become a unique style of singing which George V, Johnson Jr. is indeed, a master of. I highly recommend any individual or group to take George as their singing instructor!

Throughout 2020, Jazz Heroes — “activists, advocates, altruists, aiders and abettors of jazz” — responded to challenges brought on by a pandemic, economic crisis and social-political turmoil with energy, imagination and resilience. So the Jazz Journalists is proud to celebrate 23 of these diverse, devoted people based in 21 U.S. cities. Public presentations to the Heroes of their personalized Awards are to be announced.

These Jazz Heroes are united in determination to keep jazz in the air and in our ears, for everyone to enjoy and be enriched by. They are presenters, educators, writers, photographers, broadcasters, videographers, non-profit administrators, chefs, festival workers, public faces of grassroots organizations and in several cases active players who have developed, sustained and helped document America’s native-born music in their local communities and beyond.

The Jazz Journalists Association, a nonprofit professional organization of media content creators covering jazz, established its Jazz Heroes designation in 2010, having previously (starting in 2001) called the honorees members of the JJA “A Team.” The JJA presents annual Jazz Awards for excellence in music and music journalism; nominees for 2021 Jazz Awards will be announced mid-April, with winners of those Awards scheduled to be announced on May 3.

Entities collaborating on the 2021 Heroes campaign include Carolyn McClair Public Relations, Jazz Promo Services, the American Jazz Museum, and The Syncopated Times. The JJA thanks them for their participation and support
See:

Paul Carr, a Houston native and 1985 Howard University graduate, carries on the Texas tenor tradition espoused by great heroes such as the late Houstonians Arnett Cobb and Don Wilkerson who served as his early idols and mentors. He grew up in inner-city Houston and was a member of the Kashmere High School Stage Band, whose director, the late Conrad Johnson, is the subject of a documentary, Thunder Soul, produced by actor Jamie Foxx.

Paul has recorded 5 CDs, which have been well received by critics and jazz fans alike. His new CD “DC-NYC Organ Sessions” was released in September 2014 and hit the top 10 on the Jazz Week radio play charts. His 2013 CD, “Standard Domain,” reached #3 on the Jazz Week radio play chart and stayed on the chart for 16 weeks.

Paul was a favorite of President Clinton during his term in office and Paul performed at many of the Clintons' private events. He also did a special performance for the late King Hussein and Queen Noir of Jordan at their residence in Aqaba, Jordan.

Paul is passionately committed to educating children, particularly on the preservation of jazz. In 2002, he founded the Jazz Academy of Music, which hosts summer camps and jazz ensembles for kids throughout the year. Paul has changed the lives of hundreds of his students by selflessly sharing his knowledge of music and life. Several of his students have been admitted and even received full scholarships to some of the top music schools and conservatories in the country. In fact, five of Paul's students have been admitted to the prestigious Julliard School of Music in New York. Paul’s work was acknowledged in 2012 by ABC Channel 7 News when he was selected as a “Harris Hero” for his amazing work with music students across the area.

Most recently in March 2014, Paul received the prestigious, Howard University, “Benny Golson Jazz Master Award”, for his outstanding work as a performer, presenter and educator. He served as a panelist at the 2014 Congressional Black Caucus where he spoke on the importance of jazz education and advocated for a Bill currently being vetted in Congress that will offer federal support toward the advancement and preservation of traditional jazz.

In 2010, Paul re-established the East Coast Jazz Festival as the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival and serves as its Executive and Artistic Director. The festival enjoys over 2,000 attendees that travel from states across the U.S. and beyond.

When speaking with #DCJF Artistic Director Willard Jenkins, legendary DC Jazz educator and musician Davey Yarborough stated, “We started the Washington Jazz Arts Institute (WJAI) because of our understanding of the importance of inspiration, support and guidance in a developing artist’s journey.”

Yarborough served as the Duke Ellington School of the Arts Jazz band director for over 40 years up until his retirement in 2019. During his tenure, Yarborough accumulated many musical and academic accolades for his influential work as D.C.’s premiere Jazz instructors. While he appreciates these much-deserved honors, Yarborough’s true passion comes from empowering the hundreds of aspiring jazz musicians that filled his classrooms over the years; where he consistently made sure that his student’s needs were met, both in-and-out of the classroom. Yarborough and his wife, Esther Williams, founded #WJAI in 1998, and he has served as its president ever since, continuing his journey as an educator to this day.

In addition to his excellence in the classroom, Yarbrough also is an accomplished jazz musician, having shared the stage with jazz legends including Sarah Vaughn, Shirley Horn, Wynton Marsalis, Rick Henderson, and Keter Betts. Perhaps what most prepared Yarborough for his career was his own jazz education, learning from legends Frank Wess and Sonny Stitt. While Yarborough’s innate talent as a Jazz performer could have taken him anywhere in the world, his goal of entrusting the future of jazz in the hands of musicians of tomorrow reigned above all.

For our final #BlackHistoryMonth feature, please join us in honoring Davey Yarborough’s 40 plus years of service to our community and for his commitment to empowering the next generation of Jazz artists.

Why it matters: The pandemic has wrecked an already vulnerable jazz industry by forcing live music shows to halt. Musicians and club owners have turned to online fundraisers for survival, and point to the music's connection to civil rights as a need to keep its legacy alive.

Driving the news: Owners of the historic Washington, D.C. jazz club Blues Alley, a venue that once hosted the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz, announced this month that the club is up for sale and likely won't reopen at its original Georgetown site.

Other well-known jazz venues from Baltimore to Seattle have been closed since the pandemic began, placing their futures in peril.

"We’re talking about living in a world (where) my great-nieces and nephews (know) less or nothing about saxophonist Ben Webster or bassist Esperanza Spalding," said poet Rodney Leonard, whose new book "Sweetgum and Lightning" fuses jazz and autobiography.

"Jazz is African American genius.

La reserve records and Canada-based Cellar Music Group’s imprint Reel to Real are doing their part to save jazz history by releasing previously forgotten live recordings by notable artists.

Another upcoming project involves saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin performing at Seattle’s Penthouse jazz club in 1962.

Flashback: "It is no wonder that so much of the search for identity among American Negroes was championed by jazz musicians," Rev.
The intrigue: Hip hop artists, poets, and filmmakers are working to keep jazz alive through their own art.

Hulu on Feb. 26, will release Lee Daniels' biopic, "The United States vs. Billie Holiday," starring R&B artist Andra Day as the jazz icon who battled addiction and FBI harassment.

"If we weren't so dismissive of the powers and achievements of women, we would have given her a little more space to tell her story a long time ago," Parks said. "We're just getting around to it now."

DMV-based pianist Chris Grasso has carved out a niche that certainly qualifies him for the pantheon of great jazz vocal piano accompanists. That admirable coterie includes a distinguished list of piano accompanists who were and are particularly adept at providing vocalists with the kind of pianistic care and feeding that is by equal turns comforting and challenging.

That list of great vocal pianist accompanists certainly includes artists like Bobby Tucker (Billie Holiday), Tommy Flanagan (Ella Fitzgerald), Norman Simmons, Jimmy Jones, Ronell Bright, Ellis Larkins, Jimmy Rowles, Lou Levy, Bill Charlap (Tony Bennett), and other notable vocal specialists.

For the 2019 DC JazzFest – which now seems like a lifetime ago, what with pandemic restrictions in 2020 and our impending 9-month prohibitions of concert performances for audiences – we mounted an evening in tribute to Quincy Jones and Roy Hargrove. Opening that evening was the distinguished vocalist Sharon Clarke with the Chris Grasso Trio. That evening also featured an array of distinguished special guest soloists, including Cassandra Wilson, Joshua Redman and Kenny Garrett – each expertly accompanied by the Chris Grasso Trio, which added immeasurably to the great success of that Kennedy Center evening.

Fortunately for the DMV community, Chris Grass has answered the pandemic era call for fresh musical performances with a series of live streams from Blue House Studio in Kensington, MD. Blue House, site of several of our virtual DC JazzFest 2020 performances last September, has proven itself a particularly adept space for streaming performances and Chris Grasso has seized that locale for his ongoing series. Next up for the series is Billie Holiday Competition winner Sara Jones with the Chris Grasso Trio on Friday, December 4. Clearly some questions were in order for Chris Grasso.

When did you begin your Covid-era performance series at Blue House, and what was your original motivation?

Our first performance was in March. It was actually a replacement for a live show. I had just started a new ticketed monthly series at Mr. Henry’s in February. Our first night, which featured Lena Seikaly, sold out. It was such a great audience – really a listening crowd, and not an empty seat in the house. Sharón Clark was the next featured performer, scheduled for March 20, and also sold out in advance. But the week before the show, the COVID shutdowns hit, and Mr. Henry’s had to close. I got in touch with Jeff Gruber at Blue House and we moved the show to his studio. Jeff and I have known each other and worked on projects over the years. I was really fortunate to know someone with his skills, and a beautiful studio, who was available and willing to help make it happen. Then, when we saw the response from the audience, it was pretty overwhelming.

How have you gone about publicizing these performances, and what has been the streaming audience response to these performances?

Over the years, I’ve developed an e-mail list that’s grown to a decent size. Of course, social media is essential as well. I also try to get the shows listed on CapitalBop, JazzNearYou and other jazz listings and social media pages, including those done by Bertrand Uberall and Maryam Balbed. Promotion is definitely a big part of the work.

Do you monetize these streaming performances? If not, how is this series supported?

Yes, since the beginning, we’ve been requesting contributions from viewers, and that’s actually been successful. I think there’s something of a debate about the best way to handle streaming concerts. One school of thought is making payment mandatory – you send money, then you get a link to the show. I definitely understand that approach, and it’s obviously more like the way things would work in the analog world. The challenge with that is you miss part of the benefit of social media. Many people don’t plan or like to commit ahead of time, but if they’re scrolling through Facebook and see that a show is about to start, or even has already started, they may hop on and watch. Very often, they’ll also contribute.

You’ve carved out a real niche for yourself as a sensitive vocal accompanist. Has that been your intention all along, or did other circumstances contribute to your excelling at that important role?

I’d like to say that was by design, but it really was not. I’ve always loved great singers, but I didn’t really start to work with vocalists regularly until I began performing and booking the jazz at the Henley Park Hotel. We started the program with strictly instrumental groups, but it pretty quickly became apparent that the management wanted vocalists, so we switched the focus. Sharón Clark and Dick Smith became featured artists, and then we expanded to lots of other great singers, including Felicia Carter, Paige Wroble and more. Then, when I moved the program to the Mandarin Oriental, singers were really the draw, and that’s when I started working with Lena Seikaly, Sara Jones, Alison Crockett, Julian Hipkins and others. We also had a guest artist program where I got to bring in people like ThimNicki Parrott, Alan Harris, Denise Thimes, Denise King, Becky Kilgore, Byron Stripling, Annie Sellick and Deborah Brown. I was really lucky to get that opportunity.

How has your Blue House series of streaming performances evolved thus far?

Well, like everyone, we were really flying blind in the beginning. We had no idea whether people would tune in, and whether they would support it financially. After the first show in March, we realized there was a need for this kind of thing. But then, of course, lots of other streaming music started happening, so there’s a lot more competition. But, knock on wood, we seem to have developed something that people like and that, I hope, they’ll continue to support.

“Bootsie” began his musical career at age 6 on piano switching to drums at 10. His grandmother gave him a saxophone at age 19 and he knew he had found his niche. In school, classmates included drummers, Lex Humphries, Bill Cosby, Al “Tootie” Heath; bassist “Spanky” DeBrest, trumpeter Lee Morgan, and a host of Philadelphia giants who went on to help shape the maturing sound of jazz music. Those who had the biggest influence on him were his father, who played trumpet with Bill Doggett’s 16 piece big band, and his cousin Jimmy Hamilton, saxophonist and star clarinetist of Duke Ellington’s band for 26 years.

Bootsie toured Europe as well as the United States and Canada with one of his "mentors" THE LEGENDARY SAXOPHONIST, ODEAN POPE & HIS SAXOPHONE CHOIR leaving a lasting impression on audiences all over the world. He has headlined venues from New York’s famed Birdland to the very prestigious Le Grand Hotel in Paris.

Today, “Bootsie” Barnes is known as “the man with the ‘Tenor Touch’ because of his dynamic style on the TENOR SAX. His smooth and distinct sound is easily recognizable whether softly caressing a ballad, or swinging hard, during live performances or on CD.

JazzTimes magazine sums up his solos thusly: “…plays tenor saxophone with self-assured flair and gorgeous depth…” and “…plays in a classic style reminiscent of Gene Ammons and Hank Mobley…”. Bootsie can be heard as a sideman on many, many recordings, (see his discography) he has released one vinyl album and three CD’s as a leader; “Been Here All Along”, “You Leave Me Breathless” “Hello” and "Boppin' Round the Center" ..

Jazzin Around with friend, mentor, hipster, old school hustler, producer, promoter and innovator Jim Harrison, Founder of Jazz Spotlite News and the first person to take me under his wings when I moved to New York in 1979. We met when I joined the Barry Harris Jazz Choir. At the time I had begun honing my craft, making a living while singing on the streets of NY with George Braith, Billy and Mark Johnson, also with Marvin Blackman's group. We played on the corners of 48th & Broadway, 59th & Columbus Circle, 42nd St Park, Washington Square Pk, World Trade Center. Penn Station was off bounds then. There were no banners or ID cards then. We'd catch the patrons coming out of the Broadway theaters and make a killing. At times the crowds on the corners got so big the police would make us move because we also drew pickpockets, five card Marley dealers and loose joint sellers.

When Mayor Koch was running for 're-election he put the clamps on the streets and ordered the police to impound the musicians instruments and sound systems. We were the first victims. One afternoon they took impounded George's Braith-A-Phone, Mark and Billys bass and our mouse amps, then wrote us summons. There were several other groups playing the streets as well which led the way for today's musicians to be legal. Now folks travel from all over the world to sing on the sidewalks of New York. Almost every city in America has legal street Musicians! It wasn't easy singing on the streets of NYC in those days.

I had also just began performing with James Moody and Lou Donaldson. Things were very promising. One year later I was introduced to Pharoah Sanders by brother Leon Thomas at the Village Vanguard. A few days later I received a phone call from Pharoah asking me if I wanted to hang out on the weekend. When I got to the address it was Power Station Studio. After watching for awhile about one hour later he asked me if I wanted to sing my lyrics. In one take we recorded

John Coltrane's Classic "Moments " Lp Rejoice

Everywhere I went all the cats looked out for me. Clifford Jordan, Barry Harris, Harold Vick, Frank Foster, Lou Donaldson, Walter Bishop, Walter Davis, Tommy Turrentine, Clearance C Sharpe, to name a few. Jim gave me my first opportunity to write about America's Classical Music "Jazz" in the Jazz Spotlite News and the inspiration to create the Washington DC Jazz Network years later. When I peeped what he was doing I wanted to be just like him. Jim was a old school hustler. In The musicians were the writers for the paper. It was very hip and historical. Everyone were telling their own stories and how things really happened.

His wife Fannie would always be somewhere in the audience. She was a sweetheart. We spoke and hung out together weekly for several years. He always told me we have to and must control our own shit!

Jim was also very instrumental in Charles Tolliver's career by sending him to speak with Jackie McLean for a tryout with his band because he knew Jackie needed a trumpet player. Jackie McLean showed Charles the ropes and recorded some classic albums. The rest is history....years later Charles Tolliver and pianist Stanley Cowell would create, and influence the independent record movement with Strata East Records, many years before Prince hit the scene. Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell are living role models for the entire record industry. Most musicians around the world are now a independent record producers, thus proving that artists don't have to be signed to a major label to make an album. It's called controlling your own destiny! If you don't own your masters, the Masters will own you!

Jim Harrison began as a promoter for Jazz Mobile at the beginning in 1964 and retired in 2004. For 40 years he led the promotional ground work long before the internet. You would always know that Jim Harrison had been passing through because his trademark flyers would be in all the Jazz venues around the city each week. No club, jazz school, concert, or festival went untouched...hahaha..

Together we would be at concerts selling the Jazz Spotlite News for $1.00 and passing out posters and flyers keeping jazz fans updated on all coming events. Jazz Spotlite News! Jazz Spotlite News! Get your Jazz Spotlite News!!! Moments later Moody would introduce me to the stage with Freedom Jazz Dance and burst into Giant Steps. The crowd would go wild! Oh what memories..

October 20, 2018
Ron Sutton, a beloved alto saxophonist and D.C. native, died at Washington Hospital Center on Sunday. He was 55. The cause was a heart attack, said vocalist George V. Johnson, a longtime friend and collaborator.

Sutton’s playing was built upon the bebop vernacular of Charlie Parker, and reflected his training in D.C.’s tradition-steeped jazz community. But his sprightly and angular phrases had their own distinctive flavor, often moving in exciting and unexpected directions, fusing the old with the new. A frequent Sutton catchphrase was, “Back to the future,” pianist Marc Cary said.Sutton’s soloing was always heartfelt and charged with energy. “He liked to lift off,” Cary said in an interview. Johnson, an area vocalist and organizer, said of Sutton: “He put his stamp on the music in this town.” He called Sutton an “unsung hero,” and “one of the finest alto players from Washington, D.C.”

To All Friends and Family,

A Message from Gigi
My dear family and friends we are raising the last bit of money to complete my treatments for colon cancer. My oncologist stated it has become almost undetectable. However I still need your help and appreciate any amount you can spare via my GoFund Me page.
Thank you and God bless you!

Update

March 2019

$6,305 of $17,000 goal

As some of you may or may not know, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in December 2017. Although the tumor was removed and the doctors said there was no more cancer, unfortunately, a few weeks ago they discovered that it spread to both lobes of my liver showing several lesions and in my pelvic area as well, and is now Stage 4. The doctor stated that unless I begin immediate treatment, liverfailure would occur in 3 months. THIS IS A VERY AGGRESSIVE CANCER THE ONCOLOGIST STATED.

My Oncologist wanted to place me on a new Immunotherapy drug treatment and was very optimistic about it, but after looking at the P.E.T. scans, the Board of medical doctors decided I was no longer a candidate for the treatment.

The good news is there is an Alternative medical treatment available, which has been proven effective on cancer patients, and even in those who are in late stages successfully. However, the treatments are very expensive and are not covered by insurance. My doctor is quite confident in the life saving benefits of the treatment and the eradication of the cancer as a whole.

Please help me save my life for my daughters and family, by donating whatever amount you can afford to help with the costs of medical expenses, travel, etc. Every amount helps even if it's $1!

Always with Love & Gratitude,

Gina "Gigi" Brooks

Hi Gigi, I am listening with great interest to your Legends interviews.

If I may. Jimmy Heath was speaking like a statesman. His description of his relationship with his friends in Philly and San Fran was very telling. Particularly the way he talked about how the comaraderie of musicians collaborated for the sake of music and music only. The reed men loved to walk around with their mouthpieces only all day, just to see how they could develop a tone uniquie to themselves. I ran with a number of them in my San Fran days.

Mr. Heath was right, i don't see that anymore. Just like the jam session this most important component of jazz has eroded. Biting but true. Jimmy touched upon our relationship with the arts and government. He is so right. I was interviewed by the Orlando Sentinal once. I made simliar remarks about the Florida scene. The late great legend, Panama Francis read it and invited me over to his house with he and his wife to discuss this. We who have the fire in the belly recognize each other. This is for all of the American art forms. I just had discussions over the holidays in NY with
family and friends about how Aaron Copland tried to correct this at the Yaddo in Saratoga Springs NY, My hometown! He invited all of the major American artists to retreat at the Yaddo, Stipend free. It was a 20 year endeavor that spawned our existing art progams in the greater US today.

Here for the first time Afro-American artists enjoyed the blessings of an environment that allowed the development of art for art's sake. I mean 18 pulizer prize winners. People like Paul Robeson. Booker T. Washington, A Phillip Randolph, (one of my mentors) Marget Walker, Langston Hughes, our jazz and classical greats in all the artist disiplines. Last month I uncovered these records and told the story to the astonishment of my community. This was a secret program. J Edgar Hoover tried to shut it down. They did not want this information to suface. But it's here now. Anyway, Jimmy Heath touched that nerve. Why can't we do that in the open
here like they do in Europe and elsewhere.

Well, after you read that mesmeriizing poem my eyes welled up. A pause,. I waited to see how Mr. Heath handled it. He did so graciously. But when you played a song dedicated to Percy, there was not a dry eye in the house.

Well done Ms Gigi. I have listened to Benny Golsen. We had a day together in NY. By ourselves. The same with Billy Taylor. Cobi Narita of the New York Jazz Coalition had a program similar to Steamin Greens. Each week Cobi invited a guest to speak at an organized event, similar to what Christan McBride is doing with his Harlem Museum discussions too. I was the only one that showed up during
their visits. I learned of their greatness then and there. I was the scibe for the coalition so I got to be privy to a lot. " I Remember Clifford" The great bassist Reggie Workmen had me learn it as a bass bowing lession in Brooklyn. When Christian started talking about Billy Taylor I got teary eyed again. You're shows are so emotional to me.
Little Jimmy Scott loved him some Paul Robeson. You asked him twice to make sure. Suprising that a man with a contra-alto voice deems his role model a deep bass. But Jimmy explained it well, it's the way he told the story and of course he was the ultimate statesmen for the American arts.

To quote Mr. Golsen. "GIgi, you are famous!" I don't know what gives me the authority to say this Gina, but, I'M PROUD OF YOU! I look forward to your year in broadcasting.

Thanks,
your friend, Bill
