Profile Information

What instrument do you play?
Trumpet and Piano
Who influenced you to listen to jazz
Many people beginning with my Father who was a professional musican along with my Mother who was a Piano player along with Home studio where she gave lessons privately as well.

My Jazz appreciation began probably when I was 12 years old as we lived in Arlington next to the owner of the Bayou club in Georgetown which resulted in free shows as I got older along with listening to all types of jazz and dixieland and be bop both live and at neighbors house and mine)......Then, when I began High school I use to go quite often with my Dad and his music friends to Blues Alley where ,currently, many friends currently perform.

As years passed, I continued to go to Blues Ally with wife and my trumpet friends and later with my son who is a very good trumpet player (I'm jealous of his natural skills and improv skills). More recenly I have frequented Twin Jazz in D.C., Bethesda Blues and Jazz, The Birchmere, and The Carlyle Club in Alexandria.
How did you find out about the WDCJN?
A few of my friends (that play in my Big Band told me about this and I believe subscribe) in addition to a few acquaintances that I have met on gigs taht I sub in and Big Band virtual meetings (invite only for players with similar interest that are of the same skill level.....).

Tell us about yourself
I have played in Bands since I was 11 or 12 years old with my Dad. I pretty much was alllowed to sit in at rehearsals but not allowed to play the actual gigs..I ,then, continued to play in Junior High and then Washington-Lee High School, in which I auditioned and was chosen to play 1st parts along with being chosen to play in Orchestra 2 days per week( and then go back to Band). I had two great trumpet teachers: Bramwell Smith of Army-Pershings Own and Keith Clark of the Army Band-Pershings own. Then in college , I continued playing (but not as a music major).....and have continued playing trumpet in both high level community bands and Swing Bands. I auditioned and played in National Concert Band of America in addition to playing for many years and am currently playing in City of Fairfax Concert Band and their sub bands. I also currently play in Fauquier Bands as well......

My own Swing Band, Nitehawks Swing began in 1998 as a joint venture with another trumpet player who has recenly retired due to health issues. He played Lead trumpet and I played 2nd trumpet ...Unfortunately, when he retired, the band asked me to move up to Lead trumpet....I had the skills but probably had gotten use to the solos written in the 2nd parts.

I have played musicals, Church services, and numerous Galas (and fund raIsers). We also play 5-6 times per year with no fee at Nursing homes as it is our way of giving back to the community..along with seeing what good it does when we see the response from many elderly that obviously brings back good memories to them.

Our previous Domain name was lost due to one of our Band member that handled our website and Domain leaving the area suddenly(transfer by Navy Intelligence)...and when the new person took over we discovered that our original Domain name for all these years up till late 2018 had expired and someone else had purchased it...In the meantime, we are hoping to repurchase are old Domain name as many contractors have our brochures, cd's and promotional material with our original domain name.

We have in the interim picked a temporary Domain name as we lost our website and the Domain name as both were
originally held by the same company. In summary, both the website and original Domain name are a "work in progress" along with someone in our band putting us on facebook.

We do have a presence on LinkedIn under my name.........

I have many musician friends currently both on active duty and retired from the military bands that I will be more than happy to provide for references.

We have several YouTube(s) on the web.......A few, as I understand it were put on by somebody in the back rows of the audience of a stadium or outdoor amphitheater with a cell phone. These were done without our knowledge or giving permission (which is not needed anymore). Obviously, these recordings are poor due to distance and not using multiple professional quality mics etc.

Our former website had many songs and a few videos that we are going to insert on our new website......As far back as 2013..there is a YouTube of a concert we did for the City of Fairfax (part 1 & 2) that has most of our current musicians on it.

I guess we have been blessed to have most of our family (our musicans) stay with us along with losses due to heath and job transfers etc).

We currently had several gigs lined up for Spring and Summer that we had to cancel in the best interest of our musicians and the audience etc due to the "pandemic".

Please let me know if you need further info or references.

Repectfully,

Steve Firestone

Born into a family of Venezuelan folk musicians, jazz pianist Benito Gonzalez has always had a deep-rooted appreciation for pastimes and traditions. Today, as a rising star of one of America’s finest musical traditions, Gonzalez has come to his current status by following in the footsteps of jazz’s ancestral forebears. The consummate musician, producer, arranger, songwriter and artist in his own right, Wayne Linsey’s list of credits reads like a who’s who in contemporary music. Legendary names like Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder are among the plethora of artists with whom the L.A.-based maestro has worked on stage and in the recording studio. Super producers like Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds and hitmakers like Whitney Houston and Earth, Wind & Fire always call Wayne to work on their projects; as a touring musician, Wayne spent many years with the ever-popular band Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, lending his distinctive and soulful touch as the primary keyboardist to the group’s energetic live show.

Critics have their purposes, and they're supposed to do what they do, but sometimes they get a little carried away with what they think someone should have done, rather than concerning themselves with what they did~~~Duke Ellington
