THE ARTIST
With her unique genre-bending blend of Jazz, Pop, R&B, and Spoken Word, Malachi attracts new fans each day. Carolyn Malachi’s latest release, the “Lions, Fires & Squares” EP, bears the influence of her recent tours in South Africa. Now joining Sierra Leone’s ‘Peace by Piece’ effort, she continues to spread good news from the African continent. The Washington Post describes Malachi’s infectious musical style as “Hard to put in words” and Okay Player says “It is no surprise that [Lions, Fires & Squares] triumphs from its ability to blend genres and fizzle perceptions, even if it leaves listeners thirsting for more.” She released ‘Lions, Fires, and Squares,’ an EP with songs about relationships, love, and strength, in 2010. Malachi’s 2009 album ‘Revenge of the Smart Chick II: Ambitious Gods’ earned her honors and accolades. Her 2008 debut project, ‘Revenge of the Smart Chicks,’ is a rally call to empower women in the arts. The artist founded the Smart Chicks, Inc. organization and its ever-growing Smart Chicks Network brand, to develop visibility and leadership opportunities for women in the arts. John Malachi
John Malachi (born September 6, 1919 – February 11, 1987) was an American jazz pianistborn in Red Springs, North Carolina, who was a member of the epochal Billy Eckstine Bebop Orchestra in 1944-45 and again in 1947. He also worked with Illinois Jacquet in 1948, Louis Jordan in 1951, and a series of singers including Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Al Hibbler, and Joe Williams.
Malachi opted out of the traveling life of the touring jazz musician in the 1960s, living roughly the last decade and a half of his life in Washington, D.C. freelancing, playing with touring bands and artists when they stopped in Washington, and leading music workshops at clubs like Jimmy MacPhail's Gold Room and Bill Harris's Pig's Foot. Malachi's generosity towards younger musicians was legendary. One of the musicians he helped influence recalls that younger players referred to his workshops as "The University of John Malachi."
Malachi is credited with creating the nickname "Sassy" for Sarah Vaughan, with whom he worked with the Eckstine Orchestra and later directly with her. Malachi was fond of categorizing jazz pianists into "acrobats" and "poets," classifying himself among the latter
