Matvei Sigalov was born in Samara, Russia and since his early childhood music has been the main focus in his life. Classically trained on a violin from the age of six, he became interested in rock music during his teens and started playing guitar. Later, in his early twenties, Matvei discovered jazz and it became the start of a musical journey that, eventually, led him to the United States.

Since his arrival to the US 8 years ago, he's been very active on the East Coast music scene and established himself as one of the premier improvising violinists. The list of names and venues goes on and on: playing for Patti LaBelle, Isaac Hayes and James Ingram at the Kennedy Center in DC, getting a standing ovation at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore, while opening up for Stanley Clarke, Jean-Luke Ponty and Al Di Meola, and wowing the audience at the Iridium in NYC with the guitar legend Les Paul.

Tim Green, native of Baltimore, Maryland is a well-known saxophonist, composer and arranger. Tim was inspired by a family of musicians to get involved with music at the young age of 10. While attending high school at the Baltimore School for the Arts, he was selected to participate in the All Star Grammy High School band that gave him the opportunity to perform at the Grammy’s in Los Angeles California. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2004, where he studied with world-renowned instructors such as Dick Oatts, Gary Dail, Bob Mintzer and Steve Slagle. In May 2007, Tim graduated from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California with a masters degree in Jazz Studies.

Over the years Tim has had the opportunity to perform with various artists such as, Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, John Fadis, Hubert Laws, Kenny Burrell, Patrice Russan, Gary Thomas, Mo Horrd, Dontae Winslow, Warryn Campbell , The Movement Orchestra, Queen Latifah, the Mingus Big Band, Gary Bartz, and Wynton Marsalis.

Hamiet Bluiette

Saturday, September 18, 2010

Bluiett was born just north of East St. Louis in Brooklyn, Illinois (also known as Lovejoy), a predominantly African American village which had been founded as a free black community in the 1840s. As a child, he studied piano, trumpet, and clarinet, but was attracted most strongly to the baritone saxophone from the age of ten. He began his musical career by playing the clarinet for barrelhouse dances in Brooklyn, Illinois, before joining the Navy band in 1961.

In his mid-twenties, Bluiett heard Harry Carney (the baritone player in the Duke Ellington band) play in a live concert in Boston, which also made a strong impression on the young Bluiett, providing an example of a baritone saxophonist who played as soloist rather than accompanist.

Following his time in the Navy, he returned to the St. Louis area in the mid-1960s. In the late 1960s Bluiett co-founded the Black Artists' Group (BAG) of St. Louis, Missouri, a collective dedicated to fostering creative work in theater, visual arts, dance, poetry, film, and music. He led the BAG big band during 1968 and 1969.

Bluiett moved to New York City in the fall of 1969, where he joined the Charles Mingus Quintet and the Sam Rivers large ensemble. In 1976 he co-founded the World Saxophone Quartet (along with two other Black Artists' Group members, Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake), which soon became jazz music's most renowned saxophone quartet. He has remained a champion of the somewhat unwieldy baritone saxophone, organizing large groups of baritone saxophones. Since the 1990s he has led a virtuosic quartet, the Bluiett Baritone Nation, made up entirely of baritone saxophones, with drum set accompaniment.

In the 1980s, he also founded The Clarinet Family, a group of eight clarinetists playing clarinets of various sizes ranging from E-flat soprano to contrabass.

Bluiett has also worked with Sam Rivers, Babatunde Olatunji, Abdullah Ibrahim, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye.

He returned to his hometown of Brooklyn, Illinois in 2002. He currently does gigs, including the notable New Haven Jazz Festival on August 22nd, 2009. He performed with students from Neighborhood Music School in New Haven, CT. The group were known as Hamiet Bluiett and the Improvisational Youth Orchestra.

Carolyn Malachi
Tribute to John Malachi

Hailing from the Washington, DC / Baltimore region, vocalist, producer and über smart chick Carolyn Malachi’s introduces music lovers to "Revenge of the Smart Chicks II: Ambitious Gods." , She calls her brand of music "haute eclectic soular blues." ROTSC II is the stirring and genre bending follow-up to her 2008 debut "Revenge of the Smart Chicks." The first project spawned a movement, blog and the non-profit Smart Chicks Inc.

Curtis Fuller, frequently called one of the finest trombonist in jazz music, performed with Art Blakey, toured with Dizzy Gillespie, toured with Count Basie, and collaborated with Benny Golson and The Jazztet. He is an indispensable instrumentalist and turned the classic hard bop quintet into the hard bop sextet

For over 25 years, pianist Cedar Walton has enjoyed an uptempo career, which never seems to slow down. Maintaining a non-stop itinerary, Walton has accompanied a litany of Jazz greats while also fronting his own successful groups. Born January 17, 1934 in Dallas, Texas, Walton set his sights on a career in music at an early age. An after-hours gig at the Denver Club introduced him to notable musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane, who would sit in with Walton's group when they passed through town.

From there, Walton ventured to New York and began to work locally with Lou Donaldson, Gigi Gryce, Sonny Rollins and Kenny Dorham before landing his first touring job with J.J. Johnson. Soon after, the pianist made his recording debut backing Kenny Dorham on the Riverside album Kenny Dorham Sings. He also made two records with J.J. Johnson' s group on Columbia Records before joining the Art Farmer/Benny GolsonJazztet, a group he toured and recorded with for two years. Walton's next major musical association was with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. During his three years tenure with Blakey, Walton stepped forward a composer, contributing originals likeThe Promised Land to the group's recordings for the Blue Note and Riverside labels.

Featuring...

JAVON JACKSON

Javon Jackson came into international prominence as a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. As a member of Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Javon toured and made many recordings with the legendary drummer. In addition to Blakey, Jackson has toured and recorded with Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Betty Carter, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, Donald Byrd, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Richard Davis, Bobby Hutcherson, Curtis Fuller and Stanley Turrentine.

As a recording artist, Jackson has appeared on over 125 recordings. Additionally, he has developed a formidable career as a leader, recording and touring throughout the world. Javon’s current musical group, The Javon Jackson Band, incorporates many styles including jazz, funk,R&B and rock.

His latest recording, Once Upon a Melody, finds Javon returning to acoustic jazz after a series of popular jazz-funk recordings. In addition to two originals, Javon includes tunes by the legendary Sonny Rollins and Wayne Shorter. In addition, Jackson covers music from the songbook of artist Corinne Bailey Rae. Joining him on Once Upon a Melody are Eric Reed on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass and drummer Billy Drummond.

As an addition to the current tour schedule, the Javon Jackson Band will be joined by special guest Les McCann, the iconic soul jazz pianist, vocalist and composer. Known as one of the godfathers of soul jazz, Les is recognized as a founding force for the genre known as funky jazz established in the mid 1960’s. This collaboration of the young along side the legend is not to be missed. Also look for Javon as a special guest with Cedar Walton.
