Fred Yonnet "Harmonica Front & Center"

A Taste of Jazz, R&B and Funk

One Show 8:00 pm - $20 at the door

FRED YONNET
Official Site

When it comes to the harmonica, Frédéric Yonnet knows how to turn skeptics into believers. Most people perceive the harmonica as a “side” instrument used in country and blues.

Philly jazz episode 18 - Fred Yonnet

However, Yonnet is one of a handful of musicians to successfully demonstrate the harmonica’s versatility as a lead instrument in contemporary jazz, R&B and other genres of music. Yonnet says, "Limitations are not in the instrument but in one's thinking."

Clearly, Yonnet has no limits. Just listen to his sound. It funks. It rocks. It hips and hops. It grooves. It sways. It testifies. It prays. It has a reverence for blues and jazz while appealing to a generation breed on pop rock and hip-hop.

He as performed with music legend Stevie Wonder and recently recorded with generational icons, the Jonas Brothers.

His current stint with music royalty Prince has exposed him and his powerhouse sound to a wider, more diverse audience. Praise from Dave Chappelle and performances with neo-soul queen Erykah Badu, Soul prodigy John Legend, jazzman Branford Marsalis, and Jewish raggamuffin Matisyahu have all contributed to his mission to change the way the music industry, musicians and enthusiasts regard the "pocket" instrument. HAPPY BIRTHDAY
LAVERN BAKER

LaVern Baker (November 11, 1929 – March 10, 1997) was an American rhythm and blues singer. She was born Delores LaVern Baker in Chicago, Illinois. She is occasionally referred to as Delores Williams because of an early marriage to Eugene Williams;

in the late 1940s he was identified in RCA Victor record company files as "D. L. McMurley." She was the niece of blues singer Merline Johnson and was also related to Memphis Minnie.

She began singing in Chicago clubs such as the Club DeLisa around 1946, often billed as Little Miss Sharecropper, and first recorded under that name in 1949. She changed her name briefly to Bea Baker when recording for Okeh Records in 1951, and then became LaVern Baker when singing with Todd Rhodes and his band in 1952. Read more...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
HOUSTON PERSON

Described as "jazz's working class hero, a true man of the people," Houston Person came to national attention with a series of soulful albums recorded for Prestige in the 1960s. Person's fame grew still more with his successful 30-year musical partnership with vocalist Etta Jones. Numerous recording artists—including Lena Horne, Lou Rawls and Horace Silver—have also called on Person to perform on their albums. A passionate tenor saxophonist, alternately tough and tender, Person is now recognized as one of today's leading instrumentalists. Teaming with the Tammy Hall Trio, Houston Person makes his Stanford Jazz Festival debut for a night of outstanding straight-ahead jazz in the great tenor sax tradition. Read more...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
ALVIN BAPTISTE

A music master, composer, arranger, educator and performer - Alvin Batiste defies description.
He is a Renaissance Man for the 21st Century.

He is a Music Pioneer who has contributed to every genre.

He is simply "Batiste" - one of the most distinctive and virtuosic of modern jazz clarinetists, and his name alone has become synonymous with taking the music to the next level and the next generation.

Although sometimes called a "New Orleans clarinetist" (his Columbia album even billed him as a "Legendary Pioneer of Jazz"), in reality Alvin Batiste is an avant-garde player who does not fit easily into any classification. Under-recorded throughout his career, Alvin Batiste was a childhood friend of Ed Blackwell and he spent time in Los Angeles in 1956 playing with Ornette Coleman.

Clarinetist and composer Batiste first received international attention after he appeared on two Julian Cannonball Adderly recordings. Batiste has just completed the musical score to Vu-Dou Macbeth an Operatic choreo-drama by librettist Lenwood O’Sloan. Batiste performs throughout American Inner city school districts using the principles in his book entitled: The Root Progression System: The Fundamentals of African American Music. Read more...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
In Remembrance: Carlos "Patato" Valdez 1926 -2007

For over 60 years Carlos "Patato" Valdez demonstrated how a musician could combine technical skill with superb showmanship. His conga playing demonstrated the fusing of melody and rhythm, and his keen understanding of rhythm is rooted in dancing. Patato even mastered the art of actually dancing ON TOP of his congas during his performances, to the delight of the audience.

Valdez dazzled an audience well into his seventies with his rumba moves. He's also is the man who gave Brigitte Bardot a mambo lesson in the film “And God Created Woman”. Valdez also expressed his understanding of melody through bass and tres, the Cuban folk guitar.

Valdez' understanding of melodic percussion was well ahead of his time and his technique required advances in drum technology. During the late 1940's he helped develop the first tunable congas, as earlier models were tuned by the unwieldy method of heating them with a sterno can. His interest in design, as well as his friendship with LP Founder Martin Cohen, led to the development of the LP Patato Model Congas, one of the top-selling conga drums of all time.

It is Valdez' spontaneity and charm that enabled him to draw audiences from vastly different backgrounds and cultures into the irresistible Afro-Cuban rhythms which he created. Patato will be remembered by all as a giant of a man, and his spirit shall live forever through his music.

Great News "Maybe" Travelers! As you may have gleaned, the theme of our "Trip of a Lifetime" Egyptian Tour and Cruise is LEGACY. Since posting this trip we have discovered that a new Nile Cruise ship is set to launch November 2009.

Please let me know if the Washington DC Jazz Network recommended you.

Photobucket

The name of the ship is Jaz Legacy! The stars have aligned. We were able to negotiate to have our Nile cruise booked on the Legacy!

This is exciting news. Not only is it 5 star, but it is a new ship as well. Although the cost rose by $100 per person as the ship is brand new, we are absorbing the cost so that there is no increase in the price for the land tour and cruise. So, enjoy! You are the beneficiary of stars aligning for us!

However, to ensure we maintain our fabulously low "All Inclusive" cost, it is extremely important that you get your deposit in as soon as possible. Space is limited; this is not a decision you can make at the last minute and be assured that there will be space available. You MUST make your decision and reserve your spot now or forward to anyone who may be interested. Time is of the essence. Please contact me, Dr. Nkechi Taifa, Esq. (202) 641-6605 or email legacytravelsite@verizon.net for the brochure and application so you can get your deposit in asap. A payment plan will be established.

"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do, than by the ones you did." (Mark Twain)

We hope you will join what will truly be a trip of a lifetime! Blessings, Dr. Nkechi

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Rudy Van Gelder -1924

By Andy Karp

Rudy Van Gelder and Alfred Lion by Francis Wolff, courtesy of Mosaic Images

Although Rudy Van Gelder’s name usually appears in small type among the credits on a jazz CD, it is writ large in the annals of jazz.

As the engineer who recorded such seminal albums as John Coltrane's Blue Train

A Love Supreme,

Rollins' Saxophone Colossus

Miles Davis' Workin'

Andrew Hill's Point of Departure

Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay, and

Hank Mobley's Soul Station

Van Gelder is revered by jazz fans the world over. The timeless music he captured and the sonic qualities of his recordings define the sound of small group jazz in the 1950s and ’60s. Yet that sound—clear, detailed, dimensional and, above all, musical—remains fresh and is still admired and emulated.

A native and lifelong resident of New Jersey (“the birthplace of recorded sound,” as he proudly points out), Van Gelder continues to work from the studio and home he has maintained in Englewood Cliffs for nearly 50 years. He remains active, recording the music he loves by combining old-school savvy with the latest digital technology. Recent projects include remastering many of his classic Blue Note recordings and making new recordings such as Just Between Friends, a duo album on HighNote by bassist extraordinaire Ron Carter and tenor saxophone giant Houston Person.

Joe was a very talented individual. While at Howard I got the opportunity as a student, actress/dancer in many of the productions he directed. We stayed in touch while he was at Ruckers and suddenly I lost touch. "Weep not, Weep not for he is not dead...He is resting in the bosam of Jesus" (James Weldon Johnson)

Henry Edmonds was also one of my former instructors. She is truly missed. However we all know that Joe and Henry are in a better place.

I am so happy I have become a member of the Network. I have regained my modivation and enthusiasm to perform again by seeing and reaquainting with musicians in my past.

Thanks so much for the acceptance. I use to blog and do things like that a lot, but fair warning I can be way too talkative if I start doing those things again. I've been trying to get back to the music. Speaking of which, I would love to colab on this event to make it something special. It is for a very very worthy cause.

Malachi was back with Eckstine in 1947, toured with Illinois Jacquet in 1948 and then worked with Pearl Bailey in 1950, Dinah Washington in 1951, Louis Jordan in 1951, Sarah Vaughan from 1952-54, Al Hibbler from 1955-58,
