MONK The Play: A Review

By Alverda Ann
Muhammad

Special to the Informer

There are some events that leave you breathless. There are musical, theatrical and dance performances that foster total engagement of your heart, mind and body.

Just such an occurrence is what is in store for those who catch a performance of "MONK The Play" every Sunday through June 28 at the Blair Mansion Restaurant in Takoma Park, MD.

Audelco Award Winner Rome Neal's solo performance is riveting. He is Monk. If there ever was a marriage made in heaven, this is it - between the actor and the material.

Laurence Holder's incredible "slide" into the essence of the incredible musical genius of

Thelonious Sphere Monk and what drove him, what made him tick; how the political and cultural scene had its impact on his natural talent - is a remarkable work of art.

George V Johnson Jr. showcases talent and entertainment in the Washington metropolitan area. Producing "Monk" and bringing Neal to the Historic Blair Mansion has to be one of Johnson's most rewarding efforts. Neal brings a wealth of theatrical experience to the role, and give audiences a glimpse into the brain and soul of one of the most inventive pianist of our time.

So, whether or not you are a jazz lover, and especially if you are or claim to be, make it a point not to miss "MONK The Play" by Holder and starring Neal as Thelonious Monk at 3 p.m. on Sundays through June 28.

Greetings Jazz Lovers, Friends, and Sponsors

As you know, I've been working very hard to keep the music alive and I've had a great time doing it. In support of musicians, friends and colleagues I have always been very proud of announcing and promoting their goods, services and kind deeds where and when ever possible at the Washington DC Jazz Network without any monetary benefits. As we celebrate the Off Broadway Play "MONK" at the historic Blair Mansion Inn. I look forward to many more years of being one of the soldiers helping to keep America's Classical Music (JAZZ) alive. I ask you to join me now and become a sponsor of "Monk The Play" by Laurence Holder and starring 5 time Audelco Award Winning Actor ROME NEAL about the life and times of jazz piano great Thelonious Monk.

For as little as $100 you can be a sponsor for the next two months and have your name or business name printed on our lovely "MONK" post card flyers, which are distributed all over the city. The names also are apart of emails, myspace, blogs, websites, facebooks, twitter, google groups reaching out to tens of thousands of people all around the world and placed on ads taken out in jazz magazines (when applicable). During sponsorship series the sponsors are always complimentary guests at the shows and their names or business names are acknowledged each performance night. So become a sponsor NOW!!!.... Feel free to reply to this email for more information about issuing a payment with credit cards (paypal) or by mail. Time is running out for the May series. If all goes well the play will extended throughout June. Help us to keep jazz alive. So join our illustrious group of sponsors May series as we continue to make MONK The Play one of the cities true treasures.

Lastly, please support these businesses who contribute and are listed. And when you do tell them you found out about them from The Washington DC Jazz Network. I'm waiting to hear from you today!

The consummate musician, producer, arranger, songwriter and artist in his own right, Wayne Linsey’s list of credits reads like a who’s who in contemporary music. Legendary names like Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder are among the plethora of artists with whom the L.A.-based maestro has worked on stage and in the recording studio. Super producers like Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds and hitmakers like Whitney Houston and Earth, Wind & Fire always call Wayne to work on their projects; as a touring musician, Wayne spent many years with the ever-popular band Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, lending his distinctive and soulful touch as the primary keyboardist to the group’s energetic live show.
