WE LOVE YOU

Our Brother Hodari Abdul-Ali

Has returned to the Creator

Hodari Abdul-Ali

The family of Brother Hodari Abdul-Ali wishes to share with you that Hodari returned to his Creator on Saturday, April 30, 2011 surrounded by his wife and children.

A janazza (funeral pray service) is planned for Monday, May 2 at 1:30pm following Slat Thur (noon prayer) at Masjid Muhammad. The Mosque is located at 1519 Islamic Way (4th Street, NW near the intersection of New Jersey Avenue and P Street, NW) in Washington, D.C.

Please feel free to bring flowers or cards to the Monday prayer service or the Memorial Service.  A public Memorial is being planned. Details of the Memorial will be announced as details are confirmed.

Hodari was celebrated by his friends and family less than a week before he left us. The outpouring of love was so valuable to him and appreciated beyond words. He delighted in the songs and the words of praise and honor. The Langston Room at Busboys and Poets we filled to the brim. And though nearly 100 people could not get into the room, they stayed in the restaurant just to show their support.

Please continue our support of Hodari by making a financial contribution to help his family to defray costs. You can make a secure donation via PayPal.

Please post your messages for Brother Hodari's family on this Facebook page. The family will draw from our energy for strength in the coming weeks. The family has requested financial contribution in lieu of flowers or cards.

Hodari Abdul-Ali was an international peacemaker who has combined a career of business, journalism and community activism and who has helped create understanding about Muslims around the world.

Hodari Abdul-Ali is a Muslim of African-American descent who has combined a remarkable career of business, journalism and community activism into a lifetime of great accomplishments. Born in San Diego, California, Brother Hodari graduated magna cum laude from Howard University's School of Communications in 1976. While there he was the Editor-In-Chief of the campus newspaper, The Hilltop, and travelled to Africa for the first time. Over the years he has worked with a number of publications and currently is a reknowned programmer with public radio station WPFW 89.3 FM in Washington, D.C., currently hosting the brilliant "We Ourselves, The Legacy Edition," on Mondays from 10-11 a.m. as part of the Early Morning Public Affairs Stream. For years the listening community eagerly woke up to the riveting jazz and justice of "Freedom Sounds" which he also hosted on WPFW.

From 1977-1984 Brother Hodari founded and operated Liberation Information Distributing Co., which became a leading wholesaler of books and periodicals about Africa, African-Americans and Islam across the United States. His book distribution business was featured in Black Enterprise Magazine, and Brother Hodari was widely respected as a literary distributor, responsible for many of the books which for decades have graced the home libraries of cultural and political activists across the country.
Beginning in 1981, Brother Hodari founded Pyramid Books in Washington, D.C., which by 1990 grew to become the 1st chain of independent African-American owned and oriented bookstores in the U.S., with locations near the Howard University campus; at Prince George's Plaza in Hyattsville, MD; in the Hechinger Mall in N.E. D.C.; in the Mondawmin Mall in Baltimore; and in his hometown, San Diego, selling a commodity that was not widely distributed before he came on the scene - Black Literature. Since 1995 he has operated Dar Es Salaam Books/Health Center in suburban Washington D.C.

As an activist, Brother Hodari has received numerous awards for community service and been involved with a variety of organizations ranging from those advocating reparations to those opposing the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Among other groups, he is a member of the Governing Body of the Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA); Director of the Universal Human Rights Network; Executive Director of Give Peace and Chance Coalition, and a member of NCOBRA - the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America.

The consummate musician, producer, arranger, songwriter and artist in his own right, Wayne Linsey’s list of credits reads like a who’s who in contemporary music. Legendary names like Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder are among the plethora of artists with whom the L.A.-based maestro has worked on stage and in the recording studio. Super producers like Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds and hitmakers like Whitney Houston and Earth, Wind & Fire always call Wayne to work on their projects; as a touring musician, Wayne spent many years with the ever-popular band Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, lending his distinctive and soulful touch as the primary keyboardist to the group’s energetic live show.
