The inventive and adventurous open-minded approach of Wallace
Roney's first three HighNote releases, (Prototype HCD 7116, Mystikal HCD
7145 & Jazz HCD 7174) is firmly maintained on IF ONLY FOR ONE NIGHT.
Here Roney has succeeded in taking all of his influences and forging them
into a coherent whole which is somehow more than the sum of its parts. There
are glimmers of bebop, postbop, Trane, Herbie Hancock begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting, Weather Report-ish
funk & fusion, hip-hop and, of course, Miles Davis, but yet the music always
sound freshly-wrought and never derivative. Recorded live at New York's famed
jazz club the Iridium, Wallace is backed every step of the way by the core
band which has been with him since Prototype. With brother Antoine on reeds,
bassist, Rashaan Carter and the new faces of keyboard star Aruán Ortiz and
drummer Kush Abadey, the band delves into a sonic landscape laden with modern funk grooves and chop-heavy soloing. IF ONLY FOR ONE NIGHT is full of provocation. This music is challenging, vivacious and, above all, soulful.

Heralded as an "improviser who loves complicated almost mathematical lines and who performs with catlike grace" by the New York Times, trumpeter, composer and bandleader Wallace Roney is one of the most exciting and innovative musicians on the creative music scene. His consummate artistry and eagerness to explore and transcend musical boundaries has led him to collaborate with such diverse musicians as Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Carole King, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Prince, Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell, among numerous others~~~Julie Muller Stahl

PLEASE TURN OFF OR PAUSE MUSIC PLAYER WHEN PLAYING VIDEOS AND INTERVIEWS

Antoine Roney

Wallace has kept alive the tradition of nurturing young and talented musicians as key components in his working band. His current configuration has

Arnold Lee

Rashaan Carter on bass

Aruan Ortiz on piano

and 17 year old Kush Abadey on drums.

With Wallace and his brother Antoine on Tenor, Soprano and Bass Clarinet, the infusion of new blood has synergized into an incendiary unit, taking the eclectic Roney Quintet repertoire to fiery heights of intensity, and eloquent, poignant expressions of virtuosity. The young Abadey has created an almost spooky parallel with Roney, much the same way that Tony Williams added something unique to Miles Davis’s second great quintet of the 60’s. The fact that bassist Rashaan Carter’s last name is the same as Ron’s from that same group, is purely a coincidence. But Rashaan is establishing his own reputation and adding the funky, swinging bass lines that along with Abadey, propels the band to musical bliss on any given night. Aruan Ortiz on Keyboards is not Herbie, but he has that same tasteful, elegant sense of when to play sparse, when to play intense, when to play acoustic, when to play electric, that accentuates what his rhythm mates are doing with the foundation, and what Wallace and Antoine are doing with the horn lines out front. The end result is at times, sonic internal combustion and at other times, lyrical, hypnotic, musical tapestries, that can soothe the stress of everyday life in America. You should come out and see and hear this band. You will enjoy this music, no matter what your taste.

Wallace Roney short DocumentaryThis is a short documentary narrated by Billy Taylor on Wallace Rooney. This includes historic footage of Wallace's meeting with the great Miles Davis.

He was born in Philadelphia and attended Howard University and Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts after graduating from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts of the D. C. Public Schools, where he studied trumpet with

Langston Fitzgerald of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Diagnosed with having perfect pitch abilities at 4 years old, Wallace began his musical and trumpet studies at Philadelphia's Settlement School of Music. He began studying with Sigmund Hering of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of 7 up until Herring's death in 1980. Herring, along with the watchful eye of

Eugene Ormandy, regularly presented Wallace at recitals at the Settlement School and with the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble during his studies as a youth in Philadelphia.

He took lessons from Clark Terry and Dizzy Gillespie.

Wallace also studied with the great trumpeter Miles Davis from 1985 until Miles' death in 1991. Wallace credits Miles as helping to challenge and shape his creative approach to life as well as being his music instructor, mentor and friend. Wallace Roney holds the distinction of being the only trumpet player Davis ever personally mentored.

When he entered the Duke Ellington High School for the Performing Arts, Wallace Roney had already made his recording debut at age 14, and had attained distinction as a gifted local performer in the Washington, D.C area. In 1979 and again in 1980, Wallace Roney won the Down Beat Award for Best Young Jazz Musician of the Year. In 1989, and again in 1990, Wallace won Down Beat Magazine's Critic's Poll for Best Trumpeter to Watch.

With all of his skills and early accomplishments, Roney also spent years scrounging for work. Early in his career in the '80s, he was at one point homeless, he lived frugally, sleeping on the floors of friends' apartments and generally "wearing out my welcome," he recalled to Washingtonian Post writer James McBride. In 1983 his future began to look brighter—at least temporarily. While taking part in a tribute to Miles Davis at the Bottom Line in Manhattan, he actually got to meet his idol. "He [Davis] asked me what kind of trumpet I had," Roney told Time Magazine, "and I told him none. So he gave me one of his." Throughout two dismal years in '84 and '85 he was forced to play in Latin dance and reception bands. The New York clubs, once a prominent part of the jazz scene, had mostly disappeared.

Photobucket

The skies began to clear in 1986 when Roney received two calls—within one month—to tour with two jazz legends: drummers Tony Williams and Art Blakey. The rest is history. Roney has been one of the most in-demand trumpet players on record, movie and commercial recording sessions since his arrival on the professional circuit.

Roney first came to international prominence in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers when he succeeded Terence Blanchard in 1986. Later in the 1980s and early 1990s, Roney was an integral part of Tony Williams's quintet. In 1991,

Roney played with Miles Davis at the Montreux Jazz Festival. After Davis's passing that year,

Herbie Hancock,Wayne Shorter,Ron Carter,Wallace Roney,Tony Williams

Tony Williams Quintet New York ' City of lights ' With Ira Coleman, Mulgrew Niller, Bill Pierce, Wallace Roney, Tony Williams

Roney toured in memoriam with Davis alumni Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams and recorded an album, A Tribute to Miles, for which they won a Grammy. Wallace Roney has been an integral part of bands with Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Walter Davis Jr., Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Jay McShann, David Murray, and McCoy Tyner; as well as a featured as a soloist with Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Curtis Fuller, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Dizzy Gillespie. He was one of the most popular jazz sidemen in the music industry early into his professional career and is one of the few musicians in his generation who learned and perfected his craft directly from alliances with Jazz Masters.

Roney recorded his debut album as a leader, Verses, on Muse Records in 1987. A number of albums on Muse, Warner Bros. Records and Concord Records/Stretch Records followed and by the time he turned 40 in 2000 Roney had been documented on over 250 sound recordings. His two most recent albums are Mystikal and Jazz, recorded in 2005 and 2007 respectively for HighNote Records.

Antoine Roney (born April 1, 1963) is an American jazz tenor and soprano saxophonist.

Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts of the D. C. Public Schools and attended college at The Hartt School of Music, of the University of Hartford, where he studied with alto saxophonist, Jackie McLean.

Throughout the 80's and 90's he worked with Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean, Clifford Jordan, Ted Curson, John Patton, Rashied Ali, Arthur Taylor, Jesse Davis, Ravi Coltrane, Michael Carvin, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Chick Corea and Elvin Jones and has released 5 albums as a leader.

He is currently a member of the Wallace Roney Quintet, led by his brother and trumpeter, Wallace Roney.

Father: Wallace Roney - U.S. Marshall, President, American Federation of Government Employees Local 102

Grandfather: Philadelphia musician, Roosevelt Sherman
