Millions of people have found using a nettie pot or more commonly known as neti pot, to be a gentle, effective and all-natural way to relieve sinus symptoms caused by allergies, colds, flu and sinusitis. On nettie pot.net you will find lots of information on neti pots, how to use them, highest rated neti pots and helpful how to videos. Also, be sure to browse our frequently asked questions for more helpful information.
You many have seen Dr. Oz on the Oprah show demonstrating how neti pots work and explaining how useful they are in alleviating chronic sinus problems, clogged nasal passages and the headaches and facial pain that go along with them. Oprah has stated that she uses her neti pot every day and can’t live without it. When she was stuffed up and couldn’t breathe on travels in South Africa, and couldn’t find one in stores she looked for a gravy boat to use. Most people become lifelong users once they are introduced to them.
According to Dr. Oz, a neti pot is a small teapot like bottle with a long straight spout. When you use them properly, it reduces contaminants and dust in the nose and is very effective way to clean the sinuses. He says that modern studies are showing sinus cleansing is as effective as drugs for preventing sinus infections. He says that regular use is also very beneficial for people with nasal allergies and headaches.
They are a recommended solution for:
Neti pots have been around for centuries and originally come from the Ayurvedic/yoga medical tradition. They are still an important part of Eastern meditation processes. Use is on the rise in the U.S. due to a large amount of news coverage as well as an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Dr. Oz says that although it might seem a little strange to Westerners, it does give you a wonderful clean feeling.
People of all ages can benefit from using a neti pot. Pregnant women who often get stuffy noses during pregnancy may find using them especially helpful as they are all natural and safe for the baby. The saline mixture not only cleans the nose but also causes the nasal passages to shrink a little so it is much easier to breathe after use. There are special neti pots made for young children that look more like a squeeze bottle. Saline flushes are soothing for a child who has a cold or allergies and is too young for cold medicine. You can check with your pediatrician just to be sure it is okay for your child and never use a neti pot on a fully stuffed up nose that is blocked.
First, you mix your saline mixture. You fill your pot with warm distilled water the temperature of your body. Most neti pots come with prepackaged salt packets that have a mixture of ingredients to clean and soothe. You can mix your own saline mixture from salt and baking soda but most neti pot manufacturers recommend you use a premixed packet. Using common iodized salt is discouraged because it is not pure, medical grade salt and may have contaminates harmful to delicate nasal passages. Most neti pots come with at least 50 of the premixed salt packets and you can buy neti pot solution refills.
Water quality is very important! Use distilled water in your neti pot if you can. I am a regular neti pot user and decided to switch to just using our warm filtered shower water instead of bothering to heat up distilled water and it really stung and irritated my nose and made my nose bleed. We have city chlorinated water with a shower filter attached but it was still too harsh for my nasal passages. When I was using the distilled, heated water with the included salt packets it was soothing and I could breathe so much better. Just a tip, be sure to use the packets with distilled water.
After your solution is mixed and dissolved you lean over the sink face tilted down and insert the spout into one nostril. Tilting your head toward the other nostril the water will seep out of your nose and drain through the other nostril. You empty about half of the water in one side and then switch to the other side.
Here is a video made by one of the top rated manufacturers that shows how to use the neti pot.
Dr. Oz recommends that most people cleanse once per day first thing in the morning. If you feel an infection coming on or if you are exposed to the flu or cold or nasal allergies are flaring up he says you can cleanse up to four times per day. For instance, if you are out and about among people who are sick with the cold and flu you can come home and use your neti pot to rinse out your nose to flush out the cold and flu germs. Nasal flushing has also been recommended for preventing the H1N1 virus. Apparently, the virus breeds and grows in your nose so if you rinse your nose out regularly even if the virus is in your nose it can’t multiply and grow making you sick.
Neti pots are available at many natural health stores as well as online. We have researched all of the available pots and have found those to be the highest rated on the market. You can find a list of recommended neti pots at the top right side of the page called “recommended neti pots”.
