By By grafting the traditions of American jazz to his authentic Jamaican roots, pianist Monty Alexander has spent a lifetime exploring the rich depths of
musical and cultural diversity. In a career that spans more than four decades,
he has performed and/or recorded with artists from every corner of the musical
universe: Frank Sinatra, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Quincy
Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare and many more. Born and
raised in Kingston, Jamaica, he took his first piano lessons at age six. As a
youngster, he was often invited to sit in with the bands of prominent musicians
working in Jamaican nightclubs and hotels. During his teen years, he enjoyed,
among others, the performances of Louis Armstrong and Nat "King" Cole at the
Carib Theater in Jamaica. The shades of joyful gospel music in these artists'
performances had a profound and lasting effect on Alexander's own
style

Bennie Maupin's highly personal bass clarinet sound helped define such classic jazz recordings as Miles Davis'Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, Big Fun and On the Corner, as well as recordings by Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band, and the Headhunters. The multi-woodwind player has also recorded with Marion Brown, Chick Corea, Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Eddie Henderson and Woody Shaw, to name only a few.
The instrumentation of Maupin’s current group, The Bennie Maupin Ensemble, harkens back to the tradition of great saxophone-bass-drum trios, such as the group led by Sonny Rollins with Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones. Maupin’s approach to his music is intentional and profound, yet alive in the interpretation of the moment.Read more...

Impromtu Tribute to James Moody featuring George V Johnson Jr -Vocals
George,
Thank you for your impressive E-mail message and the enclosed photographs. It was great meeting you and hearing you. Though you had a comforting job and an abundance of security as a conductor with The New Jersey Transit, it's obvious your heart lies within the existing realm of the music we lovingly call jazz. Few of us will ever get rich by engaging in this pursuit, but our hearts will be overrun with joy and satisfaction for having done it. Time cannot be so cruel as to keep us apart indefinitely. So, onward and upward as we chase our dreams with a votive and determined effort, in spite of all else, with an inelluctable spirit of success concerning our proleptic tomorrows. We have no choice but to HIT IT over and over again at every opportunity as faithful visionaries letting no one or anything get in our way.
Noblesse Oblige,
Benny
