 interview with guitarist
 Kurt Rosenwinkel by Gary
 Heimbauer.

 Rosenwinkel comments:
 “It’s like Picasso said,
you don’t need to try to
 find your own voice, just
 try to draw a perfect
 circle, and then the
 inevitable imperfections
 that occur, define your
 voice. So, I’m never
 thinking about music in
 terms of my own voice,
 I’m thinking about music
in terms of the way I
would like to hear it in
an ideal state and I have
to try to make that music
 almost despite my own
 voice."

 This issue also feature
 interviews with a diverse
 group of saxophonists
 including Erica
 VonKleist, Hamiet Bluiett
 and Gisseppe Logan, the

 Philadelphia saxophonist
 / clarinetist Giuseppe
 Logan prompted a buzz.
 Ken Weiss talks with
 Logan, who comments about
 his early days as a
 performer, and
 assimilating his open
 style with his education
 and immense knowledge of
 the music:

 "I was so anxious to
 learn how to play music
 good that I just forgot
 everything else that was
 important. I was dying
 because I was trying to
 learn how to play music
 real good.”

 There is also a feature
 on pianist Rick
 DellaRatta's Jazz For
 Peace "Promoting Jazz &
 Philanthropy" which
 delves into the more than

 and the fundraising they
 have done for over 700
 organizations in their
 eight year history.

Blanchard - Marsalis Spring Tour

12 Dates Across The USA

New Orleans, Louisiana.  In what is certain to be one of the most highly anticipated jazz tours of 2011, Terence Blanchard and Branford Marsalis are set to perform a series of 12 dates across the country on a rotating double-bill featuring both of their bands.  The tour will take-in such cities as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Minneapolis and Atlanta.  This unprecedented coupling of two modern-day jazz heavyweights will kick-off February 25th (see www.TerenceBlanchard.com for a complete listing of dates and venues).

Blanchard recently completed the score for Guy Moshe’s adventure thriller, “Bunraku,” starring Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, Josh Hartnett and Ron Perlman, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.  “Buraku” has been hailed as a creative tour-de-force, combining the aesthetics of a futuristic samurai film and spaghetti western with a stylish blend of neo-noir expressionism.   Blanchard’s music was also recently seen in Spike Lee/HBO’s If God’s Willing And The Creek Don’t Rise, commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina disaster and the sequel to the critically-acclaimed 2006 film, “When The Levees Broke.”  The film shows the current state of Blanchard’s native New Orleans five years after Hurricane Katrina, and follows the lives of several individuals and their families in the aftermath of one of the worst disasters to occur in U.S. history.  Blanchard won a Grammy for his 2007 CD “A Tale of God’s Will (A Requiem for Katrina),” which included tracks from Levees.

Blanchard is currently at work on an original production for Opera St. Louis, a project that he has been commissioned to create that will premiere in 2012; an orchestral  piece that he has been commissioned to write for the Louisiana Philharmonic (“Concerto For Roger Dickerson”) that is slated to premiere February 20ll, and scoring for the upcoming George Lucas/Anthony Hemingway feature film, “Red Tails.”

Blanchard’s latest CD, “Choices,” was released by Concord Jazz in 2009 to widespread critical acclaim.  Recorded in New Orleans at the Ogden Museum Of Art -- itself a survivor of Hurricane Katrina -- “Choices” addresses the choices we all make in life – both as a society and on a personal level.  Guest artists on “Choices” include writer, speaker, educator and activist Dr. Cornel West and singer, musician and composer Bilal. West performs spoken word pieces on the album with Bilal providing vocals on several of the tracks.

Terence Blanchard has established himself as one of the most influential jazz musicians and film score masters of his generation, a member of a jazz legacy that has shaped the contours of modern jazz today.  With more than 29 albums to his credit as a musician, Blanchard is a four-time Grammy Award winner and multiple nominee.  As a film composer, Blanchard has more than 50 scores to his credit and was also nominated for a Golden Globe.

As Artistic Director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, which he was instrumental in relocating from Los Angeles to New Orleans, Blanchard works with students in the areas of artistic development, arranging, composition and concert programming.  He also participates in master classes around the world as well as local community outreach activities in his beloved hometown of New Orleans.

Celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary, and what has become one of the magnet Holiday Jazz performances in New York,“Bending Towards the Light - A Jazz Nativity” explodes with Holiday cheer for the ears on December 23, 2010 at 7:30pm at B.B. King’s, 237 W. 42nd Street, New York City . The Jazz Nativity is the Christmas story told in full costume with influential jazz artists and vocalists playing the roles of the Shepherds, Kings, Angels and Mary and Joseph. Arranged by singer-songwriter Anne Phillips, the Jazz Nativity combines well-known Christmas carols with original music by Anne Phillips, Bob Kindred and Dave and Iola Brubeck.

This year, the three Kings in the Jazz Nativity are played by trombonist Steve Turre, trumpeter Warren Vache  and tap-dancer Max Pollak. The all star band features Latin percussionist Candido, trumpeter Lew Soloff, saxophonists Jon Gordon and Bob Kindred and trombonist Art Baron. The role of Mary will be sung by Amy London, that of theArchangel by mezzo-soprano Stephanie McGuire and a boy soprano from the Newark Boys Chorus School will be the Shepherd Boy. Special guests in the finale will include famed trombonist Slide Hampton, saxophonist Frank Wess, jazz violinist Russell George and Latin Jazz pianist Arturo O’Farrill.

Over the years the annual performance of the Jazz Nativity has featured a who’s who of the jazz world. Originally created at the suggestion of the late John Garcia Gensel of St. Peter's Church, the original soundtrack recording is hosted by the late CBS News journalist Charles Kuralt, with performances by Lionel Hampton, Dave Brubeck, Tito Puente, Benny Powell, Clark Terry, Toots Thielemans and many other jazz greats. It is available through  www.jazznativity.com or www.cdbaby.com.

Bending Towards The Light – A Jazz Nativity  is directed by Tad and Beth Jones.  Music Director is Bob Kindred. Composer, Arranger, Conductor is Anne Phillips.  The Jazz Nativity is produced by Kindred Spirits, a not-for-profit organization.

PRESS QUOTES:

“In Bethlehem in the grotto where Christ was born, a light shines into the darkness. The light is meant to serve, as light serves for so many religions and philosophies, as a symbol of truth and love and hope … hope that even in a dark season, we may begin to see the world bending towards the light.” -    Charles Kuralt, CBS

“By the end of “The Jazz Nativity” you know you’ve been through something wonderful …“ ~ Dr. Billy Taylor, CBS Sunday Morning
