LAVENIA SMITH

Vocalist Lavenia Nesmith began singing in church as a child in her native Washington, DC. Not surprisingly, her major musical influences were in the gospel world, most notably Mahalia Jackson. After earning a music degree from Federal City College, (now UDC), Nesmith married and raised a family. In recent years, she has returned to more regular performing in both gospel and jazz. In her Tribute to Mahalia Jackson, Nesmith tells the singer's life story in words and song. Nesmith performed one of those songs at the Kennedy Center's celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the March on Washington. In addition, Nesmith is Executive Producer and performs in a Tribute to Female Legends of Jazz, "SISTA'S CAN SA-A-NG" which has performed to sold-out crowds.

Remember what a great time the old East Coast Jazz Festival always was and what stellar work the beloved ancestor vocalist Ronnie Wells did to make it happen?

Ronnie Wells & Bobby Watson

Recall how the East Coast Jazz Festival filled those mid-winter blahs around the DC area right after Super Bowl weekend, just when you were dying for springtime; how that event filled that void with an entire weekend of great artists, swinging sounds, fellowship with jazz lovers from across the country, and big fun all under one roof? Well daydream wistfully and regret the loss of that event no more!

SAVE THE DATE: The weekend of February 19-20… as the Mid Atlantic Jazz Festival ignites the return of that big fun at the same great venue - the Hilton Executive Meeting Center in Rockville, MD (formerly the Doubletree Hotel)… for three days of good vibes, great socializing, and opportunities to hear the music as it was (classic sounds in the tradition), as it is (the current scene), and as it will be (the Next Generation)!

The Mid Atlantic Jazz Festival will reignite what was formerly known as The East Coast Jazz Festival (ECJF), in the flavor and style of that event, and in honor of ECJF founder Ronnie Wells. With a strong commitment to jazz education and the exceptional artistry of DC metro region musicians, the Mid Atlantic Jazz Festival will build upon the legacy of ECJF in presenting jazz to the region by perpetuating, nurturing and sustaining the jazz artform, engaging and teaching young musicians, and presenting top flight musicians.
